St-Ursanne
The ancient church of Saint-Pierre, the oldest ecclesiastic building in Saint-Ursanne now houses the biggest collection of Merovingian sarcophagi in Switzerland. This treasure was discovered during the restoration digs between 1977 and 1980. It is a permanent exhibition accompanied by various sculpted and carved stone objects. In the same space, you will also be able to enjoy an immersive presentation comprising large-format rear-lit images representing the region between the XVIIIth and XIXth centuries.
To round off the visit, from the outside, you’ll have the best view of the magnificent stained glass windows by the artist, Kim En Joong. These eight new stained-glass windows, fitted in 2024, were created for the jubilee celebrations of the 1400th anniversary of the death of Ursanne. The master glassmaker, Wilhelm Peters, from Paderborn (DE), created and fitted them. This major creation can now be added to the list of more than 60 places over the 5 continents that have had the honour of being glorified by this renowned artist, including Chartres, Paris, Rome, Seoul, Brioudes and Vaison-la-Romaine. There are stained-glass windows by Kim En Joong in Ireland, Belgium, Germany, Australia and in the USA… In Switzerland, his work can also be viewed at the Chapelle de Bâtiaz in Martigny and at the Hospice du Grand-St-Bernard.
